Critical Reading 11

I start to search the reference book for my later article. I find a book entitled "Free Voluntary Reading" written by Krashen. Krashen's books always become the reference of external reading journal. Therefore I am eager to find that book and pick related information to my article. I read chapter 2 and 3 of this book. The main idea of this book is revealing researches about reading including extensive reading. In the chapter 2, it conveys about research the power of reading. Some experts conducted the research in different method such as correlational, case study and experimental. The result of the research is when we want to encourage literacy development, we need to provide proper access to reading material. The power of reading gives impact toward first language development, heritage language development. and ESL/EFL language development.

In the chapter 3, it talks about research in extensive reading. Most of the researcher usually use duration and the access as the predictor of the extensive reading effectiveness. Krashen summarized some researches and proved that duration of the program conducted cannot be used as the predictor. However, access and reading comprehension has positive relationship. Access here means the total titles available book and the number of the book title read by students. Based on that research, it can be said that self-selected reading is effective program to be implemented in the school.
I hope, based on the previous research about Extensive Reading which proves its effectiveness, ER program can be implemented by government in the school to develop students' English proficiency. Specifically for EFL learners like in Indonesia.
