Critical Reading 13

The trend in 21st century learning activity is using ICT as the media of teaching. Everything has digital version including reading material. The article entitled "Mobile-based extensive reading: an investigation into reluctant readers" studies about the reluctant reader's attitude toward digital graded readers or mobile-based extensive reading. As we know, extensive reading has many advantages in EFL learning. It improves reading proficiency, vocabulary mastery,oral skill and writing skill. In order to upgrade the way of teaching, the software named XREADING are implemented to know the readers attitude toward it and reveal the factors which discourage the engagement of reluctant readers. Based on researches, digital reading has some positive thing like its convenience, accessibility, diversity, portability and flexibility. Readers could borrow the book without physically visit library. XREADING allows teachers to monitor students' reading progress.   However, there are some critiques toward digital reading, such as eye fatigue, online distractions and ingrained relationship with paper.  Beyond that critiques, the research give inference some factors which discourage reluctant reader engagement toward digital reading. Those are 1)Insufficient XREADING training; 2)Problem with XREADING software; 3)Lack of Extensive Reading awareness; 3)Influence of Intrinsic motivation; and 3)Influence of Extrinsic motivation. Therefore, teachers role in implementing modern media is important. Teachers should assist the student in operating the program to avoid misused of it. Firstly the teachers should master the program then train their students. Besides, teachers also need to motivate the students to increase students' awareness about Extensive Reading. 

Implementation :

I think XREADING is a good media for us as a teacher to use the program to provide reading material. It is mobile-based which everyone in this era can access it. The intesting appearance of the program also build students' motivation to read. Students will be more easier in choosing reading material, but teacher guidance is also important.
