Critical Reading 5

This time, I read an article about a research on implementing Extensive Reading (ER) Enrichment program to the EFL student's in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. In the introduction, the writer give literary review of background into reading; Reading in English as a foreign language (EFL) context; Extensive Reading in the EFL context; Extensive Reading and Young Learner; and Graded Readers. Those theories convey  the importance of reading in EFL learning, the effectiveness and definition of ER, the motivation served by ER to the EFL young learner and the way to chose proper reading materials  for EFL young learner.
The second section of this article is conceptual framework. The researcher use  Krashen's monitoring method, that is, understandable input is important in language acquisition. The aim of the research is whether or not ER has positive outcome on improving EFL proficiency level. The researcher explain the study including the participants (primary school), instruments, and data collection and analysis (t-test and ANOVA). The instrument which is used is selected graded readers from Cambridge University Press.
The result of the research shows that ER has positive outcome in L2 proficiency level. So based on this study, it is proven that ER really helping in improving student's EFL learning process. The sad thing is there is no follow up following ER program in teaching learning process in the school. I wish ER can be implemented into Indonesian's curriculum because there have been researches conducted in some countries that prove ER is effective to enhance student's English proficiency.
"Reading is considered a vital pathway to the development of personality traits as well as the development of social, economic and civic life"
