a New Language is a New Culture

I agree with old said "A new language is a new culture". For some of you who have gone abroad, you will really got the meaning of that sentence. When we live in another country we will learn new language and automatically follow the culture of the target country. Culture here means the way they communicate, behave and inherit custom. I have ever go to Thailand, I tried to learn the language through their culture. What should I say to greet and what gesture that I should show. That is why, language and culture is inseparable and they are vital for communication, interpersonal interaction and fundamental factor in universal awareness, personal and international understanding. We know that English is a main major in Indonesian school since English is International language, so it provide basic material for the students to make them aware of international understanding. It will be more effective if culture is being taught in the EFL class. Culture will be inducing and rewarding EFL learners and will promote discovery learning, learner-centeredness and active learning through role playing, culture capsules, culture clusters, proverbs. The actual use of language is related to social and culture values. Sharing the norm of other culture will avoid communication problem in the society.

Implication :
As a English teacher, we should properly understand English culture in order to provide our future students about English culture. By including culture material in the syllabus, the students will be more understand about what they actually learn in English, why should they learn English. However, teacher should not forget to convey the culture material in a fun way.
